Elephant

Elephants had no trunks then, and this Baby Elephant had a little black nose. He was a very funny Baby Elephant and wanted to know everything, and he asked so many questions that all his family and friends were angry with him. All the animals had no time to talk to him.

One morning Baby Elephant wanted to know what the Crocodile had for dinner. So he went to his tall aunt the Giraffe and said, ‘Dear aunt, what does the Crocodile have for dinner?’

But his tall aunt the Giraffe said, “Go away! I have no time to talk to you!” and she hit him.

Baby Elephant was very unhappy. But he went to his uncle the Monkey and said, “Dear uncle, what does the Crocodile have for dinner?”

The Monkey was eating a banana. He got very angry and cried, “Go away! I have no time to talk to you.” And he hit him too.

Baby Elephant was very, very unhappy, and he didn’t know what to do. Suddenly he saw his friend the Kolokolo Bird. She was sitting on a tree. Baby Elephant said, “Dear Bird, what does the Crocodile have for dinner?”

and ask the Crocodile.”

. There he met a big Snake and asked him, “Does the Crocodile live in this river?”

The Snake said, “If you want to see the Crocodile, there he is.”

. Baby Elephant said, “Good morning, Sir. Are you the Crocodile?”

The Crocodile opened one of his little eyes and said, “Good morning. Yes, I am the Crocodile, and what do you want?”

“Please, tell me what you have for dinner!” said the Baby Elephant.

“Come here! I can show you.”

So Baby Elephant came up to the Crocodile. Then the Crocodile opened his big mouth with many teeth in it and caught Baby Elephant by his little nose and said, “I think I’ll have a Baby Elephant for dinner today.” And he began to pull Baby Elephant into the water. Baby Elephant did not like this, and he cried, “Let me go! Don’t eat me!”

Then the Big Snake came down from the tree very quickly and cried, “My little friend, you must pull too.”

So Baby Elephant began to pull too, but the Crocodile was stronger. He pulled and pulled, and pulled, and Baby Elephant’s little nose began to get longer… and longer… The Big Snake said, “My little friend, let us pull together or the Crocodile will have you for dinner.”

So the Snake pulled, and Baby Elephant pulled too, and The Crocodile pulled. They pulled for a very long time, and Baby Elephant’s nose got longer and longer.

At last the Crocodile let go, and Baby Elephant fell down. He was very unhappy because his funny little nose was a big long trunk, and began to cry.

“Don’t cry, don’t cry!” said the Snake. “Your trunk isn’t so bad. It’s very nice!”

But Baby Elephant cried and cried.

Suddenly a fly sat down on his head, and Baby Elephant killed the fly with trunk. “You see how nice your trunk is,” said the Snake. “You could not do that with a little nose.”

Then Baby Elephant picked some grass with his trunk and put it in his mouth.

Baby Elephant began to like his new trunk. He thanked the Snake and said, “Now it’s time to go home. Goodbye, dear Snake.”

to get new noses from the Crocodile.

Then they came back with big trunks too. And from that day all the elephants have long trunks.

Day

As far as everyone knows, English people have got a lot of nice traditions and holidays. One of them is called Pancake Day. It is usually in March. On this day Englishmen eat a plenty of tasty pancakes! They have pancakes not only at home, but at school as well. But they not only eat pancakes, they run with them.

This holyday takes place in most of English places every year. These races are run by housewives. There are special rules about pancake races: housewives must wear aprons, hats or scarves on their heads. They must run about 415 yards (410 metres).

A bell rings twice before the race. With the first bell the women must make their pancakes. With the second bell they start running with a pancake in a frying-pan. While running the race, they must toss the pancakes three times and catch it back on a frying-pan. If the pancake falls down, the runner must pick it up and toss it again.

The other members of the families watch the runners and cheer: “Run, Mum, run, run quickly!”

Jeans

Levi Strauss came to America from Germany. In 1850 he arrived in San Francisco. It is a large city in the United States of America. It is situated in California. There were many people in California in those days because they wanted to find gold and become rich. They worked a lot looking for gold and spent much time in the water of the rivers. They needed strong trousers. That time was called “gold fever”.

Levi Strauss had a lot of strong material. He hoped people could build tents with it. So he decided to make special trousers of this material. They were strong and people like them. In one day, Strauss sold all the trousers he had. But they had no colour and became dirty very easily. So, Strauss decided to colour them blue. Now people all over the world wear blue jeans. They think they are good for work and travel, they are practical. Now California has the largest population in the USA. About 20 million people live there. It is because of that “gold fever” of the 1850s. Those people, who didn’t find gold, stayed in California as well and became farmers.

Answer

The Lacons lived in the part of Southern Greece which was called Laconia. The people who lived there were very brave. They loved their Motherland and defended it from all the enemies. Their life was very simple. They tried to follow the laws of their country and never spoke long. “The shorter the better” was their rule. “Never use more words than you need,” was another rule. And nowadays as you probably know a very short answer is often called a laconic answer, because the Lacons usually gave short answers.

In Northern Greece there was a land called Macedonia. King Philip ruled there. He was not very clever and he was not very brave, but he wanted to become king of all Greece. So, he collected a great army and soon he became master of all Greece. Only Laconia was not conquered. Then king Philip wrote a letter and sent it to the brave Lacons. The letter said: “If I win the battle with your army, I will become your king and ruin your great city.”

A few days later an answer was brought back to him. King Philip found only one word in it. The word was very short, and that was “If”.

Why Cats Wash Themselves after Eating

One day, a bird flew into a farmer’s yard. There was always something to eat for him there. He jumped around in the dust from one place to another picking up this and that from the ground and singing a loud song. The old bird, Tim by name, had a very good appetite and always ate a lot. Old Tim was so busy that he did not look up or around and did not see a large cat watching him from behind the farmer’s house.

“How hungry I am!” thought the cat. “But soon I am going to have a wonderful breakfast.”

Soon Old Tim finished his breakfast and was going to clean his feathers when the cat jumped at him and the bird was between the cat’s teeth.

“What a fine breakfast I am going to have!” said the cat. “Oh, no, Mr. Cat, you can’t!” cried out Old Tim. “You are not going to eat me up, are you?”

“But I am!” answered the cat. “Do you think I’m going to look at you or listen to your songs?”

And the cat sat down ready to begin his breakfast!

“Oh, no, Mr. Cat, you cannot do that.”

“But why not? Don’t get it into your head that I’m going to let you fly away! Oh, no, you are wrong here,” answered the cat.

“But have you already washed yourself?”

“No, I haven’t. But what does it matter?” said the cat.

“Oh, Mr. Cat! What did your parents teach you? How can you have your breakfast without washing yourself first?” answered the bird.

“Do you think I can’t? I don’t see it your way.”

“Of course, you can’t!” repeated Old Tim. “Ask anybody and they are going to tell you that I am right. People never eat without washing themselves first,” said the poor bird.

“Hm, well, I think you are right,” said the hungry cat. “All right, I am going to wash myself first and only after that have my breakfast.”

And with these words the cat started washing himself. The cat was so busy that he did not see how Old Tim jumped aside and flew away.

When the cat finished his washing and wanted to begin his breakfast there was no Tim there – he was high in a tree. Old Tim was happy to fool the cat. The cat was very angry with Tim. “Well, let people do as they like, but I’m never going to wash myself before eating!” he said.

So from that day on all cats wash themselves only after but not before eating.

Honesty is the Best Policy

There was an old woodcutter. He went to the wood to cut trees every day. He was a very poor man. He lived in a village near the wood. His house was the oldest and the smallest in the village.

One day the old woodcutter dropped his axe in the river. He sat down on the ground near the water and cried, “My axe! What shall I do? How shall I work for living?” There was a noise and the god, Mercury by name, dived out of the water. He listened to the man’s problem and wanted to help him. Mercury dived into the water and in a few minutes he had an axe.

“Is this your axe, old man?” he asked the woodcutter. The woodcutter looked in Mercury’s hands. It was a golden axe.

“No, it is not mine,” said the woodcutter.

Mercury dived into the river again and some time later got a silver axe.

“Is this your axe, old man?” he asked.

“No, it is not mine,” said the poor man.

Mercury jumped into the river again and brought an old dirty wooden axe.

“Is this yours?” he asked.

“Yes, that’s mine! Thank you very much!” the woodcutter was very happy.

Mercury was so surprised with the man’s honest heart, that he presented him the golden and the silver axes. The woodcutter ran away home to tell his friends about it.

At home the old woodcutter met his friend Bill.

“Hello, Bill!” he said to his friend.

Bill was a woodcutter, too. Bill saw those axes and asked, “Who gave you them?”

“Mercury, who lives in the river. I dropped my axe in the water and started crying. At that moment Mercury dived out of the water and then gave me these beautiful axes.”

“Oh, I see,” said Bill.

Bill wanted to have such axes too. So he went to the river, dropped his wooden axe into the water and waited. Mercury jumped out of the water and Bill cried: “Please, help me! My axe is in the water.”

“All right, I’ll help you,” said Mercury.

In a few minutes he dived out of the water with a golden axe.

“Is this your axe?” he asked Bill.

“Oh, yes! Yes! That is mine!” cried happy Bill.

“No, it isn’t yours,” said Mercury. “You are not honest with me. You are bad and lazy. I don’t want to help you.” Mercury jumped into the water and didn’t come out again. And Bill had nothing to do but to go home without any axe.

JIM

There was a boy whose name was Jim. He lived with his mother in a little house. They were very poor. His mother worked much, but Jim didn’t like to work. Jim was lazy. He sat under a tree in hot weather and stayed in bed when it was cold.

One Monday morning his mother said, “Help him in the field. He will pay you.”

“All right. I’ll go there tomorrow,” answered Jim

On Tuesday Jim went to Mr. Green. He worked all the day, and in the evening Mr. Green gave him a penny. But on his way home Jim dropped the penny and could not find it.

“Oh, Jim! Why didn’t you put the penny in your pocket?” He went to help Mr. Green on Wednesday, too. In the evening Mr. Green gave him a jar of milk. Jim put it in his large pocket. But when he came home, there was no milk in the jar.

“Oh, Jim! Why didn’t you carry the jar of milk on your head?”

On Friday Mr. Green gave him a large cat. Jim took the cat and wanted to carry it in his hands. But on his way home the cat ran away from Jim.

“Oh, Jim!” said his mother. “Why didn’t you take a string and pull the cat home?”

“I’ll do it tomorrow, Mother,” said Jim. On Saturday Jim worked much, and Mr. Green gave him a large piece of meat. Jim took a string out of his pocket and pulled the meat after him. A hungry dog ate the meat.

“Oh, Jim! Why didn’t you carry it in your hands?” asked his mother.

“Because it was large and heavy, Mother.”

“Then why didn’t you carry it on your back?”

On Monday next week Jim worked very well. So Mr. Green gave him a donkey. Jim put the donkey on his back and walked home.

There was a beautiful girl in the village. She didn’t laugh and couldn’t speak. Her father asked all the doctors to help the girl, but they could not. The doctors said, “The girl must laugh. Then she will speak.”

The girl and her father lived in a large and beautiful house.

When Jim was in front of their house, the girl looked out of the window and saw the boy with the donkey on his back. It was funny. And the girl laughed. She looked at Jim and continued laughing for some time. And a bit later she could speak. Her father was very happy. He ran after Jim, stopped him and said: “My dear boy, I am a happy man now because my girl can speak. Thank you.”

He gave Jim a lot of money. Jim’s mother was happy too. They weren’t poor any more.

The Adventures of Erik and Leif

Erik the Red was born in Norway in 950, but he moved to Iceland when he was a boy. People called him “the Red” because of his red hair. Life in Iceland was hard and it was a very cold place. Erik had many enemies, and he killed two men. After that, he decided to leave Iceland to escape from his enemies.

In 982, Erik sailed West and discovered a new country. It was cold, icy and snowy, but Erik wanted people to come to this new country, so he called it Greenland. Later, he returned to Greenland with more people in 986. The boats were very small, but they had cows, pigs, sheep and hens with them.

Later, Leif continued his travels to South. He discovered another green and beautiful place. It was warm and sunny and there were different fruit, including grapes. This was a part of the modern United States. Leif and his men were probably the first Europeans who visited North America.

Leif, Erik’s son, was born in 975 and lived with his father in Greenland. Like his father, he wanted to travel. In summer of 1002, Leif sailed West to look for another country. This was Canada.

The Potter and the Painter

Many years ago there lived two friends, a potter and a painter. They had little money for their job. Everything was OK between them till the painter, a very good worker, got a lot of money for a beautiful portrait he painted. The potter, a bad and lazy worker, didn’t like that. At first he asked the painter to give him some money. But the painter wanted the money for his big family. In the end the potter thought of a very bad thing. “Well,” he said to himself, “I must teach my friends, the painter, a good lesson.”

That night the potter slept very badly or didn’t sleep at all. He thought what a good lesson he could teach the painter. Early in the morning he went to the king. He said, “My king, I know that you want a white elephant. I am going to tell you how you can get one.” The king was happy to hear the potter’s words. And the potter went on telling his story. “My friend, the painter, knows how to turn any colour into white. Tell him to come here and make your grey elephant white.”

The king called his men and they ran to him. He told them to go and bring the painter. When the painter came to the palace, the king said to him, “I heard that you know how to change the colour of anything into white. I want you to make my grey elephant white. And remember, if you want to live you must do it, and do it well.”

When the painter heard the king’s words he understood everything.

“And may I ask you, my king, who told you this story?” said the painter.

“I am not going to answer your questions, and you must not ask me anything,” cried the king.

The painter thought, “My last day came because I can’t change the colour of the elephant.” The painter wanted to tell the king this, but suddenly he saw the potter’s laughing face behind the people’s backs.

“So that is your little game, my dear friend,” he thought. “But before my head falls off my neck I must teach you a lesson.”

“All right, my king,” the painter turned to the king. “I can change your elephant’s colour. But when I change the colour of anything I put it into water for a long time. And I have no pot for your elephant. It must be a very large pot.”

“Potter,” the king turned to the bad man, “you heard the painter’s words, didn’t you? Go and make a pot for him, a very large pot that can hold my elephant.”

“What have I done?” the potter thought. “That’s the end of me!” So he went to his workshop and began to make a large pot for the elephant. But who can make a pot like that? Of course, not our potter!

The pot fell to pieces the first time when the people carried it. It fell to pieces the second time when the workers put it, red hot, into cold water. And it fell to pieces the third time when the elephant put its foot on it. The painter watched it and laughed to himself. For months and months the potter worked in his workshop. During all those months he woke up early in the morning and worked till late at night. At night he didn’t sleep well but thought about the pot and often cried.

“What a mistake I made!” he repeated to himself. But one fine day the elephant ran away to the woods. What a happy day for the potter! The painter taught the potter a good lesson, didn’t he? And the potter never did bad things like that again to the end of his days.

The Tree of life

In 1250 there lived a rich man in a town called Rivergate. He had two sons and a daughter. Philippa, the daughter, was the oldest. The name of the first son was Francis, and the youngest son was called Jack. He liked to go for walks and watch the animals in the woods and listen to the birds.

One day, Philippa and Francis went hunting. Jack followed them. When Philippa and Francis had a rest, they saw an anthill.

Let’s burn the anthill.

No, don’t do that!

Get out of our way.

No, stop it! Throw the sticks away!

Jack is an idiot. He loves stupid ants.

Some time later, Philippa and Francis went hunting again. They rode into the woods on their beautiful horses. Jack wanted to go with them, but he didn’t have a horse. So he took one of his father’s donkeys.

When Philippa and Francis came to a big river, they saw a beautiful bird. It was a kingfisher*. They wanted to shoot it. At that moment, Jack came on his donkey. He shouted, and the bird flew away.

One day, the rich man called his children. He was very ill.

What can we do?

Well, there is one thing.

What is it?

The only thing that can save you is an apple from the tree of life.

Where can we find the tree of life?

Nobody knows.

Philippa and Francis, please go out into the world and look for the tree of life.

The next day, Philippa and Francis left the palace to look for the tree of life.

Please take me with you.

No, you are stupid, and you don’t have a horse.

Please, please, take me with you. I can take the donkey and I can carry your things.

Oh, all right. But don’t ask stupid questions all the time.

After many days, the three young people met an old woman. They asked her about the tree of life. The old woman said, “The tree of life is in the king’s garden. He lives in the golden castle on the mountain.”

Philippa and Francis quickly rode away.

Philippa and Francis took the short path. It was difficult to climb. Their horses fell and the brother and sister hurt their legs.

Jack took the long path. The path was easy and his donkey went quickly.

After three hours, Jack arrived at the castle. He met the king and his beautiful daughter.

Can I please have an apple from the tree of life for my father?

What is the matter with your father?

He is very ill.

Do three things for me and you can have one apple.

Three things? What are thy?

A few weeks ago, the princess lost her ring in the pond. Now she is very sad. She liked the ring so much. Find it for her. This is the first thing you must do.

Jack went to the pond. It was very big and deep. Where was the ring? He didn’t know what to do. Suddenly he heard a bird. It was the kingfisher! The kingfisher dived into the water and found the ring. Jack ran into the hall and gave the ring to the princess.

Well done! Now the second thing. The princess broke her necklace in the garden yesterday. All three hundred pearls fell into the grass. She was very sad. Find them all for her.

Jack didn’t know what to do. It was very difficult to find the pearls in the grass. Then suddenly there were lots of ants! They carried every single pearl to Jack. He ran into the hall and gave all three hundred pearls to the princess.

Now the third and last thing. What is my daughter’s name?

Is it Mirabelle?

No, it isn’t.

: Is it Sunshine?

No, it isn’t.

Jack didn’t know what to do. Then he remembered the old woman.

Is it Rainbow?

Yes, it is.

The king gave Jack an apple from the tree of life. “Your father will be better soon,” he said.

When Jack rode down path he met Philippa and Francis. “Help us!” they cried. “We can’t stand up.”

Jack helped his brother and sister get onto their horses. Then they all rode home.

Thank you, Philippa and Francis.

Father, Jack found the apple for you.

Jack?

Yes, he’s not stupid after all.

Thank you, Jack.

The Coffee Story

Kaldi was tired, but he couldn’t sleep. His goats were active and very noisy. “Why can’t they sleep?” Kaldi thought. He couldn’t understand the problem so he watched the animals carefully. They were eating some green plants with little red fruit on them. The shepherd wanted to taste the fruit. He ate the soft part of each fruit and the hard things in the centre. After a minute he began to feel energetic. He was not tired any more and didn’t want to sleep.

Those hard things were coffee beans, and Kaldi discovered them in Ethiopia more than 1,000 years ago. At least, that’s the traditional story. Perhaps, it is true, perhaps not. Nobody knows. But we know that coffee grew first in Ethiopia, and we know that somebody discovered it there more than 1,000 years ago.

The people in Turkey learnt about it. Soon after that, western Europeans began to drink it, and in 1652 the first coffee shop in London opened.

Now farmers grow coffee in many parts of the world. Some famous coffee-growing countries are Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia and, of course, Ethiopia. Coffee is one of the world’s favourite drinks, thanks to Kaldi and his goats.

The Man, the Boy and the Donkey

This is a very old story, but it teaches us something that is still true today.

One day, a wise man said to his young son, “Come with me and I will show you something.” The father got onto his donkey and told his son to walk behind him. On the road, some people pointed at the man and said, “Look at that man. Why doesn’t he let the boy ride the donkey?”

The man and the boy heard this, and so they changed places. The boy rode and the man walked.

A few minutes later they passed some other people. The people pointed and said, “Look at the boy. How can he ride while his old father walks?” so the man got onto the donkey with the boy.

Then they passed some other people, who said, “That poor little donkey can’t carry two people. They’re much too heavy.” So they got off the donkey and they both walked.

They walked through a village, and people laughed at them, saying, “Look at those two fools! Why do they walk when they have a donkey?”

The man and the boy thought, and then the man said, “We’ve tried walking and we’ve tried riding. Let’s try carrying it.” So they carried the donkey, and all the people in the village laughed at them, saying, “Look! They’re carrying the donkey! They’re mad.”

Finally, they put the donkey down, and the man said to his son, “This is the lesson for you, my son. In this life, you can never please everyone.”

Tortoise

A long time in India, there was the young king and wise man who was the king’s friend. This king was a good man but talked too much. In fact, sometimes the king could not stop talking.

The wise man thought, “I must help the king to be less talkative. But how?”

Not far away, there was a lake. A tortoise ad two birds lived near the lake, and they were all good friends. One day, the bird said to the tortoise, “We are going to a beautiful mountain tomorrow. Would you like to come with us?”

The tortoise answered, “How can I go with you? I can’t fly.” “We can take you,” the birds said. “Hold a stick in your mouth, and we’ll carry the stick between us.”

“Thank you. You’re very kind,” said the excited tortoise.

“Bite on the stick, and don’t talk. If you open your mouth, you’ll fall,” the birds said.

The next day, the king and the wise man saw two birds in the sky. “Look!” said the king. “Those birds are carrying something! What is it?”

The tortoise heard this and wanted to say “I am a tortoise! I’m flying!” he opened his mouth to say it and fell to the ground. “It’s a dead tortoise!” said the king. “Why did it fall from the sky?”

The wise man answered, “This talkative tortoise couldn’t hold onto the stick because he couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Great king, this shows us how bad it is to talk too much.” The king said, “I understand you, my friend,” and after that he became a wiser and less talkative king.

Murillo was a great painter in Spain. He painted beautiful pictures and he had many students. Once he came to his studio and found a very beautiful picture there. He asked his students who had painted that picture but nobody answered. Then he asked his slave Sebastian if he had seen somebody in the studio the night before. The slave did not answer. When the night came and everybody went away, Sebastian began to paint. He did not think of the time. Suddenly he heard a noise behind him. When he turned round he saw Murillo and his students watch him quietly.

“Sebastian,” cried Murillo, “you are a very good painter. How did you learn to paint?” “I took my lessons from you, master,” the slave answered. “From me? I have never given you lessons”, said Murillo. “But you gave lessons to your students, and I heard them,” answered the slave. Murillo was a very honest man. He understood that the slave was a very gifted painter, so he gave him freedom and began to work with his “slave”, who was not a slave any longer.

The Lion and the Mouse

A lion, who was stalking a deer in the forest, almost stepped on a mouse one morning. “Please ,Mister Lion”, squealed the mouse. “Don’t eat me. Why, I’d bravely be a mouthful for you”. “You’re right”, said the lion, and he carefully stepped around the tiny creature. Later that same day, the mouse found the lion trapped in a net which had been set by hunters to capture wild animals. With his sharp teeth, the mouse soon gnawed through the tangles in the net, and the lion was free. “Thanks a lot, little friend. Now, how can I repay you?” the lion asked. “Never mind”, the mouse said. “After all, you let me go free earlier today, and one good turn deserves another”.

Travellers

Two men were travelling in a very wild part of America. They saw no modern houses and no traces of civilization for many days. They saw only a few wooden houses and tents where the Indians lived. One day they met an old Indian. He was very clever and knew everything about the forest and the animals living in it. He could only speak English quite well.

“Can you tell us what the weather will be like during the next few days?” one of the two travellers asked him. “Rain is coming and wind. Then there will be snow for a day or two. But then the sunshine will come again and the weather will be fine.” “This old Indian seems to know nature more than we do with all air sight”, the man said to his friend. Then he turned to the old Indian. “Tell me,” he said,” how do you know that?” The Indian answered “I heard it over the radio”.

Bear and the Travelers

Two men were traveling through the great forest together. They’d always been friends, suddenly a bear came inside. One man at once climbed the nearest tree and hit himself in the leaves leaving his friend to save himself as best as he could. The other man threw himself flat upon the ground with his face in the dust. He held his breath and pretended to be dead. It is believed that a bear will never touch a dead boy. The bear simply put his nose down close to man lying on the ground and then walked away. Then the man who was upon the tree climbed down and said, “What did the bear say to you when he bent over you?” “he told me”, answered the other, “never again to travel with a friend who could desert me in time of danger”.

The King and the Critic

The king liked to write stories which he thought were very good. The people to whom he showed them did not like them. But they were afraid to say it to the king. So they said his stories were good.

One day he showed his stories to a well-known critic who said that they were bad. The king was very angry and sent the critic to prison.

After some time the king sent his men to the critic to tell him that he was free. When the critic returned from prison, the king invited him to his palace to dinner. Again he showed him some of his stories and again asked him what he thought of them.

The critic said nothing, but turned to the soldiers, who were standing behind him and said, “Take me back to prison.”

The Ant and Grasshopper

While a grasshopper was taking it easy in the shade one hot summer’s day, an ant struggled in the sun with a grain of rice that he was crying out of his nest.

“Hey, Mister Ant”, the grasshopper said. “Why don’t you take it easy, like me?

You can work tomorrow”.

The ant paused.

I’m saving up food now for the cold ahead, and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll do the same,” he said.

Three or four months later, winter came and it was very cold. While the ant was comfortably arranged in his nest, the starving grasshopper shivered under a pile of dead lives and wished that he’d paid attention to the ant’s advice.

The Stag’s Antlers

A stag admired his reflection in a pool of water one day. “Oh! But my antlers are very handsome”, he thought. “Just look at my poor skinny legs, though. They look as if they could hardly bear my weight. “Just then a lion leaped from the bushes at the edge of the water hole, and the frightened stag ran across the open field. He could run mush faster than the lion, who was quickly left behind. But when the stag into the forest at the other side of the field, he ran into trouble. His antlers became tangled in some vine hanging from a tree. As lion was catching up with him, the stag struggled frantically to free himself, and thought: “What a fool I am! As long as I could use my skinny legs, I could outran that lion. But here I am now, trapped by the antlers I admired so mush.”

A Caterpillar and a Fruit.

Once lived a beautiful fat caterpillar. She was quite happy on her tree, suddenly a terrible thing happened: she lost her appetite.

Her friends, fat caterpillars, decided to help her.

The first one brought a big apple, but she didn’t want it.

The second one brought her a big pear, but she didn’t want it.

The third one brought her a big plum, but she didn’t want it.

Then the fourth one brought her a big cherry, but she didn’t want it.

The fifth one brought her a big apricot, but she didn’t want it.

The sixth one brought her a big peach, but she didn’t want it.

Finally the seventh friend brought her a big strawberry, but she didn’t want it.

What happened with the caterpillar? Did she fall asleep? Did she die? No, she turned into a beautiful butterfly!
